Making Hanging Lanterns At Madrassa

Our completed Ramadan lanterns look so cool at night lit up with candles and hanging from the windows in the Masjid.

Our completed Ramadan lanterns look so cool at night lit up with candles and hanging from the windows in the Masjid.

You will need: Lantern Template, Glue, Scissors, Tissue paper squares, String.

Instructions: 1. Cut out template. 2. Glue tissue paper down. 3. Bind to form shape. 4. Hang or light candles

Using pre-made templates I bought 3 years ago (yeah, that long ago), our students punched out the apertures and covered the reverse side with bits of coloured tissue. Pictured above is Aravina patiently making her lantern with shades of blue.

To hang our lanterns we pierced two opposite sides at the top and threaded a piece of card through. This was because card made a better handle than string. Pictured above is my own baby cousin Sundus with the lovely pink lantern she made at the mosque.

Our students' finished lanterns! Girls got to take them home and some were left to decorate the rooms.

Want to make your own? Download these 2 Ramadan lantern templates I made (similar to the fanoos and Chinese lantern).

  1. I just purchased a few hanging candle lanterns online. I never thought of making them myself!
