Inspired By Islam, Healthcare For All: The UMMA Community Clinic in Los Angeles, held workshops to help young Muslim students pave the way to becoming doctors. Live testing, white coats and check-ups'un all!
UMMA are a public healthcare clinic, applying professional medical knowledge from the ethical health roots of Islam. The clinic have been running for over 15 years now and have helped so many people in the South Los Angeles diverse community of California.
I thought it was really cool for a health organisation to reach out like this. In February 2013, UMMA clinic held a 1-day 'Doctor For A Day' event for young students from a nearby school. It was aimed at showing the local community what is involved in the clinic.
The photos of the Doctor For A Day event have been nabbed from the UMMA Clinic Facebook page.
All the students were given white lab coats and were allowed to 'work' (you know that means playing really) with the equipment.
Professionals working at UMMA gave workship sessions on how to perform simple medical procedures and exciting question-answer sessions developed the children's understanding on living healthily.
Of course, being Inspired by Islam, children were taught about good oral hygiene, eating happy healthy diets and being good Muslims. Awesomeness.
At the end of the day, families were invited and all the young children were awarded with certificates for participation. She looks well-chuffed, ma-sha-Allah.
Children are interested in practical activities and learn better with hands-on experience; I know this because I used to be one. Now that these young Muslims have had a taster of what's involved in the medical world, many of them will no doubt be interested in walking the path.
This is a perfect case of showing by example, and y'know, so many Muslim parents are into the 'my child will become a doctor, in'sha-Allah!' but only by doing can you encourage a child to see what a career could be like.
I hope in'sha-Allah all these young people make their contribution to society because they are the next leaders. A du`a (supplication) for all them!
