Thanks to a new government initiative set up in Michigan 2010, poorer people can now eat fresh vegetables for dirt cheap. In fact, it's the people that are on government assistance, such as Foodstamps, that benefit the most from this new program called Double Up Food Bucks.

It works like a points card. When an eligible person uses his/her SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Bridge Card to shop for food at a farmers' market, "the amount of money that he or she spends is matched with Double Up Food Bucks bonus tokens. The tokens can then be exchanged for Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables."

Interested patrons, which should be everyone in 'health-conscious Ann Arbor', should visit their local Farmer's Market for tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, corn, yams, onions, apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, berries, and even baked goods!

As Muslims we are charged with the responsibilities of taking care of our bodies, which are in fact on loan from God. And fortunately enough for residents of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor, it is now much easier to eat healthy with abundant raw foods being served up by local farmers.

There are four convenient locations for the Farmer's Market in the metro detroit area listed as, the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market, Downtown Ypsilanti Farmer's Market, Westside Farmer's Market, and the Ypsilanti Depot Town Farmer's market.

And before you bite into that fresh, organic apple, remember to say bismillah!
