A fantastic talk on the fairer economic system in Islam by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf.

Notes and video below.

Key notes
If you want your commerce to be successful, you have to be trustworthy. Fulfil your promises or people will stop doing business with you.

Prophet Muhammad encouraged people to give 'ziyaada', to give a little extra to the buyer. This is a type of ehsan in faith; beauty.

Unlike our shopping malls where selling is digitised and packaged, in bazaars and Muslim businesses the produce is outside and you will see the seller using scales so that the buyer sees the justice being dealt. This is fair, this goes in favour of the buyer.

Most businesses do not work on this system of fair trade - even Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, the wife of Prophet Muhammad, used fair trade which in turn increased her business success and developed agriculture.

If you want to improve your financing system go to Moveyourmoneyproject.com - but this a temporary solution.

The events that happened in Egypt, Syria and Tunisia are all directly related to Wall Street, but don't think that you're free from it. 'If they go, you go', so don't get high and mighty that you're free from the worst economies.

Muslims need to develop their own banking system. Banking is the biggest scam that's been perpetrated; it's the only private company that can make money out of nothing! We have to earn our money!

There are 50,000 Muslim doctors in America. And they make the joke on national TV 'cough towards Mecca' you know Muslims are making an impact on the economic system everyday; paying taxes to organisations they apparently didn't believe in. We believe in giving back to the community don't we?

So where is it? Where is our ethical business? Where is the contribution? Where is the fair commerce?

Riba is the great sin in the Qur'an. We call it interest but this usury, is such a crime.
The Prophet said that 'all of them', all of the future Muslims will be using interest to which the Sahaba replied, 'kullu hum?' all of them? And the Prophet replied, 'All of them - and those that do not get involved in it directly will be covered in its dust'.
Sadaqah Rasool-Allah.

We need to start buying local and supporting our local farmers.

We must recognise the problem of food because our current system is very unjust. The importation of sugar is an issue as corn syrup in America is not healthy.

A very important study in China which was similar to a study in Hyderebad, India, found that those groups in which dairy and meat was consumed by less than 5%, there was no cancer. Think about that.

Our grandparents happily raised organic food. Animals were raised with dignity. Animals have rights in Islam. You can starve a horse in America and not go to jail for it and that is wrong. Ants have rights! Think about the psychology our Muslim community has. We love our animals. Our Prophet spoke to animals. This is not mythology, this is reality. Animals respond to humans.

New Muslims who are vegetarian when entering Islam are told 'oh you have to start eating meat. Your imaan's (faith is) not complete until you start eating meat.' And then they are given the Biryani and welcome to Islam.

Ibn u'abi Laham was a vegeterian and the Prophet accepted this from him. He didn't like eating meat and of course a Muslim vegetarian does not change the Shariah. Being vegetarian doesn't go against the faith.

'Iyyaka ku wa lahham'. Beware of meat. Eating less meat is more appropriate. In a classical book it says 'beware of meat because it has an addiction like the addiction of wine.' Seriously, start cutting it out. I'm not here to tell you what to do. Nobody can tell you what to do, you are sovereign human beings.

Fallibilism is very important. We don't doubt Islam but we should doubt our understanding of Islam. To have certainty of Islam is to arrogate to yourself some divine knowledge that you don't have.

We need to transform our food. Ideally, you shouldn't really eat meat more than once a week, which is a stipulation in the Maliki madhab: A rich woman is allowed to ask for meat twice a week. Change your diets.

Eat fresh healthy foods! Allah doesn't mention food without saying halal and tayyib (pure). Eat twice a day and eat healthy, organic, green food.

Support companies that are socially responsible. Use the Fair Trade guides - better world shopper - if you're going to fly, fly Virgin airlines; these companies are donating more and treating their employees more fairly.

Did you know about 'freegans', these people are just checking out of the unjust systems that are just killing them. They are more morally responsible than some of the Muslims I know!

You know, perhaps we cannot change the future, but this is all about preparing for Judgement Day. I used to listen to Bob Marley before I became Muslim and in one of his songs he said;
"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fullfil the book." - Redemption Song
We have hope in the Book of God. We have hope in God and in His Messenger. He will stand by us as long as you stand by him. He will never betray you.

Do not betray your faith. Clean your houses out. Change your lives.
