MADE In Europe take the Oxfam pledge to reduce food waste through their RE:BALANCE campaign

I'd like to share with you a very important e-petition for changing the way we consume. An online GROW petition by Oxfam is aiming to put heavy pressure on the world's biggest economies to act on the world food crises.

Re:Balance is a campaign about this food shortage. It is inexcusable that in the 21st century, where robots are made and we all communicate through 'bluetooth', that there is famine in places such as Africa. Some argue that this is an act of God, it is "qadr'Allah", His will. Indeed it is, but it is also our freewill that is being challenged - we know our neighbours have no food, what are we doing about it?

The Re:Balance campaign focuses on the imbalance of the global food system. Some have so much food it's thrown away and vomited back up, others have nothing. As Re:Balance explains, "we have failed to get the balance right."

Why take the pledge?
  • Around the world today, nearly one billion people don't have enough to eat
  • 1 in 7 people still go to bed hungry
  • And by 2050 there will be 9 billion people on the planet.
  • In developed countries (Europe, Americas), we waste as much as 25% of the food we buy
From a religious perspective, Islam teaches us to take or buy only the food we need and avoid wastage completely. Wasting any resource goes against the command of God:
“It is He who produces both trellised and untrellised gardens, date palms, crops of diverse flavours, the olive, the pomegranate, alike yet different. So when they bear fruit, eat some of it, paying what is due on the day of harvest, but do not be wasteful: God does not like wasteful people. “ (Qur’an, 6:141)

Do 3 things
I am joining Re:Balance's campaign to impact the global culture towards consuming food. I encourage everyone to also sign the petition. Re:Balance has produced this chart for how you can reduce consumption and waste wherever you go.

At the very least, follow three doable things:
1) Reduce your own food wastage. Take ideas from the Re:Balance chart - order less food, divide dishes with your neighbour, grow your own food instead of buying. Check out more tips for minimising food wastage.

2) Buy local food, which means supporting small-scale farmers and butchers who produce high quality and ethical food. Buy Fair Trade and check for this label.

3) I have signed the Oxfam GROW petition to put pressure on World leaders in the run up to the G20 summit in France. Now it's your turn.
