Many parables in Islamic teaching compare the Muslim's life to another part of God's creation. A Muslim is similar to a bird, balancing two wings to reach a destination, or like a "good tree" who gives shade and fruit for others.
A more revealing prophetic statement talks about how human fortitude is like a young plant - a sapling. The truth is that life is not designed to be easy for a Muslim. Every direction the wind blows brings one form of trouble, loss or pressure to push you over and test whether you can stand your ground purely on faith, or not.
The Prophet of God ﷺ (peace be upon him) said,
"The example of a believer is that of a fresh tender plant; from whatever direction the wind comes, it bends it, but when the wind quietens down, the plant becomes straight again.
Similarly, a believer is afflicted with calamities (but he/she remains patient till God removes those difficulties.) And an impious wicked person is like a pine tree which keeps hard and straight till God cuts (breaks) it down when He wishes."
Authentic hadith; narrated by Abu Hurayra, Bukhari.
