Due to growing concerns about the country's environmental issues, the Perlis Fatwa Committee has declared a new Fatwa (edict) against pollution in Malaysia.

This ruling on harming the environment has made it forbidden (Haraam) for Muslims to severely pollute Malaysia's land and air in any way, adversely causing harm to anything whether human, plant or animal. This is a good move for a modern country that could so easily follow the self-destructive lifestyle of other urbanised regions.

Heading the Fatwa is Dr Asri Zainul Abidin (pictured), the State Mufti of Perlis. He said that the purpose of the Fatwa is to uphold the well-being of human life and nature - exactly like the purpose of the Shari`ah (Islamic law).

What is a Fatwa?
A Fatwa is an Islamic contemporary rule issued by a sovereign (i.e. state leader) under the umbrella of Islam's legal system, namely the Shari`ah. Only those qualified, the Muftis, have the authority and burden to declare such rules for new situations.

Dr Abidin told journalists that Malaysian Muslims need to follow through on their beliefs to rebalance the negative environmental impact on their lives and nature; any Muslim who disregards this rule is therefore seen as being "in conflict with the teachings of Islam".
"Every Muslim is obliged to refrain from doing any activity and action that may cause environmental pollution, thus disturbing lives and ecosystems directly". - Dr Asri Zainul Abidin
Some of the most urgent matters regarding Malaysia's environmental agenda include the vast harm of the bauxite surface mining case in Kuantan, river pollution and burning of forests.

But with Malaysia's diverse communities, stunning landscapes and international tourist hot-spots, the Fatwa is not limited to Muslims only.
"Any effort to safeguard the environment is encouraged by (Islam) and is considered as a good and pious practise".
Reducing the environmental damage is a national responsibility that should be aimed at everyone regardless of their background.
