In the making for more than a decade, Australia's new state-of-the-art green embassy has officially opened in Jakarta. The fully integrated construction (model image) was designed by Australian architects with Indonesia's lush greenery in mind.

After the original embassy was bombed in 2004 killing nine people, the government began talks to develop the new secure facility.

Construction began in 2012 and the compound is set on 50,000 square metres, costing $415 million to build. Also hosting a recreational and medical centre for Australian-based officers and their families, it is the largest diplomatic post in the world.
“The Embassy showcases the best in Australian innovative design and cutting edge technology to make the most out of the Indonesia’s environment while minimising the impact on local water and energy sources,” said Paul Grigson, Australian Ambassador to Indonesia.

Now complete: office blocks towering next to native trees

The embassy has set a strong example in design that is both sensitive to Indonesia's society and aims to use low resource technologies to minimise its environmental impact. Materials that represent Australia's mineral wealth clad the exteriors - zinc, copper, brass and steel.

Sophisticated ventilation systems reduce energy and energy conservation is achieved through recycling sewerage to waste less water and green roof technology, which are two of the main energy targets for the embassy.

What Makes it "Green"?
  • The compound can withstand a one in 2,500-year earthquake and potentially move 600mm in any direction, according to an ABC report.
The ground's four enormous Banyan trees (ABC), which were relocated closer to the building, have ranked the embassy into Indonesia's Guinness Book of Records.
  • Solar technology is featured to function as water heating systems.
  • A living rooftop supports ecosystems.
  • Rainwater harvesting, energy efficient air-conditioning
