In the spirit of simple living and minimum waste I have discovered that there are alternatives to plastic, or in my case, buying more dishes when one breaks. For a family gathering last week, I really wanted to turn iceberg lettuce into a serving dish and that worked fine for solid stuff. But a watermelon or melon, works better.

How to make a melon bowl
You'll need a melon baller or ice-cream scoop, chopping board and melon.
- Slice off a thin layer from both ends of a melon to flatten the surface. This will stop it from rolling around.
- Cut the melon in half and scoop out the seeds - plop into your compost bin
- Using the melon baller, scoop out the entire melon flesh into another clean bowl until only a thick rind is left. Pour out any juices too.
- To serve: chop up your favourite fruits into bite-size chunks and spoon into the empty melon bowl along with the melon. A spritz of fresh lemon juice will delay the oxidisation (i.e. going brown). Eat straightaway!
