Don't Buy Water - Collect The Rain

Water is a life source we take for granted. Free flowing and sprung from the ground, when it's struck like oil in desert lands, we feel we've hit the jackpot.

My heritage from south Asia and Africa was built on these networks of digging wells, connecting pipes and water pumps from village to village to provide people access to God's gift.
Use a large barrel or watering can to
collect rain water

Here in Britain, alhamdulillah, it rains aplenty. Even now, in the humid heat of July, we're visited frequently by showers. This is a blessing, I don't want to be not appreciative of it.

One way I figured I could save that blessing is to store it. That way I'm not running to the taps for costly liquid, and I can easily water my fruit trees which are nearby. What you probably don't know is that my "back yard" is an acre and a half. Walking to and from the greenhouse to water the vegetable patch or fruit trees requires stamina.

Above my greenhouse is a drainage system that runs into two large sturdy barrels on either side. I keep the watering cans inside the greenhouse as well as connecting hosepipes which makes it easy to distribute water around the gardens. The barrels are excellent for providing freshwater to plants and helping little eco-muslims understand the 'bank balance' idea of saving water for wudhu.

Follow the guide on Emmitsburg.net to create your own rain barrel system. Install a few open ended pipes on the corners of your house or greenhouse. explainsLink them to the existing drainage system from the house-roof and place a flat based container underneath. It's a good idea to prop them and weigh them down with large rocks inside so they don't blow away in the wind. Once the rain collects to over half way, you can cover the container with a lid or be extra clever and install a tap on the side.
